TELL improved social inclusion among young immigrants

During its implementation, the TELL project organised workshops for young immigrants aged between 16-29. These workshops focused on storytelling or using a game called Human rights and democracy. In storytelling workshops, successful integration stories were shared using narrative methods, whereas the game-focused workshops aimed to evoke discussions about different rules, rights and manners of a new country. The latter deployed cultural and artistic methods. Additionally to project target groups, the methodology was partly tested through information exchange between project partners.

Throughout implementation, positive stories of belonging and engaging in the society as well as mutual understanding and building transcultural trust, were emphasised. In total, 90 young immigrants participated in project activities.

ARC - Engaging refugees in meaningful activities

ARC improved social inclusion of immigrants with a refugee background. During its implementation, the project found new and cost-effective methods to create meaningful activities for their target group.

The project implemented a variety of activities that included mostly gardening but also other type activities such as building small greenhouses, participation in running a radio station and language classes. Some of the activities provided participants with study credits, thus advancing their position in getting a degree and improving their chances on the labour market.

Feedback from participants was positive; they found meaningful activities in their local neighbourhood, got to know new people, and learnt Finnish and Swedish at the same time. Two participants were also hired via project activities.

In total, the project involved approximately 500 immigrants, thus exceeding its original goal of 100 with flying colours. The exact number may vary as some participants were involved more than one time.

REGI Support for Estonian families living in Finland

Work-based migration from Estonia to Finland has been growing in the last decade. As a result family members might be separated by the distance and suffer because of that. Project REGI was implemented to support Estonian families affected by this issue.

The project approached this challenge by developing ad hoc solutions such as information events for Estonians, peer support group activities as well as events for families and their children. Professionals dealing with migration-related issues — social workers and health care workers — as well as students, were also instructed on the matter. They received information about the kind of challenges Estonian workers in Finland and their family members may face, whether in the new homeland or at home and what kinds of information they need to experience a smoother transition in case they decide to move to a new home country, in this case, Finland. The project also produced short videos aimed at describing the supportive group method used by the project as well as a book aimed at improving Estonian children's perception of their new life situation.

Altogether 566 Estonians both in Finland (Turku region) and Estonia (Rakvere region), 189 professionals working with them as well as volunteers, were involved in these activities.

Let Us Be Active! improved the community of elderly in Estonia, Finland and Latvia

Let Us Be Active! improved the community of elderly in three cities: Pärnu in Estonia, Turku in Finland and Riga in Latvia.

The project empowered seniors through a participatory approach and made volunteering options visible, for example at the call center in Riga or through the Tripfriend activity in Turku. The elderly got an opportunity to be socially active, do something meaningful, find fulfillment, find an activity that fits them best and establish friendship. In Pärnu a website on volunteering made activities available for seniors.

The project also changed the procedures and routines for professionals. They got a deeper awareness of senior volunteering and options that can be recommended to seniors. The guidelines for social workers on volunteering are available online in four languages, and the city administration in the partner cities have decided to continue managing the services after the project’s end.

The project succeeded to involve three times more participating seniors (300 > 862) and social workers/health care professionals (105 > 384) than expected.
