With the new ticket system it’s possible to buy public transport tickets for all three cities: Helsinki, Tallinn and Tartu with one app, and there is no longer need to buy a plastic card or paper ticket when traveling from another country.

Travelers from Estonia to Helsinki can use the mobile application to buy a single public transport ticket.
Holders of the Helsinki Travel Card (Matkakortti) can buy and store Tallinn and Tartu day tickets on their travel card.
Passengers can view all trip details on the websites www.pilet.ee and www.hsl.fi.

The name of the application is Pilet.ee 2020. The application is available for both iOS and Android systems.
Even without the app, the HSL Matkakort holder has the option to buy public transport day tickets for Tallinn and Tartu on their card.
These are Northern corridor Örebro – Turku – St. Petersburg, middle corridor Örebro – Tallinn – St.Petersburg and Southern corridor Örebro – Riga – St. Petersburg. Project analysed situation along these corridors, defined hindrances and bottlenecks in different sections or transport nodes on corridors (ports, logistic terminals, border crossing points, etc.) and proposed solutions for improving the flow of transport. Several studies were conducted and analyses made for improvements that will shorten the transportation time of goods and passengers. Studies can be found at https://www.balticloop.eu/index.php/deliverables/

Project concluded that for example on Northern corridor the potential time saving will be about 20 minutes, if proposed improvements would be implemented. It will generate up to 58 kg less CO2 emissions per one truck.

Important achievement was also the creation of platform for gathering stakeholders of the field and expand a dialogue about the challenges, obstacles and possibilities that are identified in the transport and logistics sector from all participating areas. Project results will be integrated into strategic transport and regional development policy planning documents. In addition, the created cooperation between municipality planners and private sector (mainly transport and logistic companies) should create better understanding for future development.

The project had two blocks of activities:

1. Port flow optimisation - development of Port Activity Application

Port Activity App™ is a digital solution for sharing information before and during a ship call to a port. The sharing of information through the app between port actors makes planning more efficient for everyone involved. For example, when it comes to operational planning, the app provides updated current and correct information about when the ship is expected to arrive, when it arrives at the quay, planned departure time and any delays, etc.

Port Activity app was tested and developed in Gävle and Rauma ports. 14 ports in Finland will start using the app after the project end.

Port Activity app is an open-source solution and freely available for all interested organisations.

Links to the apps and related documentation can be accessed HERE

Gävle Activity App training video

2. Ship flow optimisation

The project introduced the Flow optimization in the regular ferry traffic to improve situational awareness, facilitate higher predictability and efficiency as well as time saving and safety in the corridor. ECDISes, Portable Pilot Units and VTS systems were developed to be able to exchange routes with each other in order to very accurately calculate where in the fairway, canal or other confined water ships will be meeting each other.

The relevant information on how the “system” works can be found in the documents, links and movie clips below on the project website.

The short summary about the ship flow optimisation activities is presented in the project video.
ADAPT enabled safer and shorter routes for public archipelago transportation

The system for public transportation at sea differs in Stockholm and Åland archipelago, but project ADAPT tackled the joint challenges in offering a safe, timesaving, and fuel-efficient public transportation at sea.
New and updated hydrology was needed to reach an improved maritime transport system and to reduce its environmental impact. Altogether, there were 46 corridors and nodes identified in the ADAPT project with proposals for adjustments for safer and shorter routes in both Stockholm and Åland archipelagos. Time savings as high as 30 minutes for a single journey was presented, which shows the possibility to decrease CO2 emissions.

The smaller fairways had not been updated for years, so the knowledge of where new and shorter routes could be used had to be ensured. Last time the depths were sounded was 100 years ago – by hand! Now the project did hydrographical surveys of sea floor by modern multibeam laser scanning of about 240 square kilometres seabed in Stockholm. In Åland, more than 100 square kilometres were scanned.

The surveys detected several deviations, and about 60 NtM (Notices to Mariners) were published as the deviations found were considered as immediate dangers. A lot less urgent updates have been introduced to and are implemented in the electronical sea charts. On Åland it led to more than 70 new or adjusted sea marks. Read the full report HERE.

By giving a detailed view also in a wider corridor around the seabed, the surveys resulted in modified routes. The environmental gains focused on reduced fuel use and emissions of CO2, NOx and SOx, but also on reduced backwash along sensitive shorelines.

The main beneficiaries of a more effective public transport are the passengers, as well as the communities and businesses on the islands depending on tourism and visitors. The results are important to leisure boaters to gain safer navigation within the archipelago.

The authorities involved considered the partnership very fruitful. The project enabled people working with waterborne public transportation to meet and exchange experiences, and together they created a toolbox providing useful knowledge for those planning and operating the public transportation in the archipelago.

FinEst Smart Mobility project - Innovative mobility solutions in a cross-border environment

The ferry connection between Helsinki West Harbour and Tallinn Old City Harbour is one of the busiest in the world with over 8 million annual passengers. Current traffic creates substantial congestion, noise and other negative externalities at both ports and in both cities.

FinEst Smart Mobility piloted five ICT solutions in the harbours and adjacent areas, to find solutions for these challenges. The pilots focused on better integration of different transport modes in inner-city and cross-border traffic.

The main results of the project:

Harbour’s PSO by Infotripla is a real-time information system to monitor traffic in the Helsinki West harbour. The system recommends routes for outbound traffic and sends alerts to the traffic management officials. After project completion, Infotripla has become part of Jätkänsaari Mobility Lab in Helsinki – a large-scale umbrella project where smart mobility solutions are tested and scaled up for further use.

FinEst API by Fleetrange is an automated and real-time schedule tracking of ship traffic between Helsinki West Terminal and Tallinn Old City Harbour. The FinEst API combines data from various public open data sources such as the ship’s automatic tracking system data, schedules, ship parameters, historical tracking data and weather observations to provide real-time data about the ship’s departure and arrival.

FinEst Mobility by GoSwift is an application targeted towards truck drivers; It sends notifications about the exact time, when to drive to the ferry terminal gates and thus, reduces waiting at the port gates in the harbour. Logistic companies responsible for the trucks in the ferries and Tallink lines have made the platform available for their drivers.

The Kyyti app developed by Kyyti Group app aimed to decrease the use of private cars between West Harbour and Vantaa Airport by offering an affordable shared taxi service and public transport route information together with ticket sales. Kyyti combined public transport in the city, intercity buses, car rental & sharing, trains and payments and ticketing under one roof. Despite positive response from involved parties, demand for such service was low.

The project results are well-summarised in these short videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVM9vpfFvbA and

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAOGcFtxz3c

Most of the partners in the project used an innovation procurement method. This means that firstly, a procurement was made to gather ideas about smart mobility solutions and mini-pilots were carried out with the selected ideas. Secondly, the results of the mini-pilots were validated, and new ideas were gathered. As a result, 6 pilot ideas were chosen to develop and test the smart and innovative solutions to relieve the traffic load around the harbours.

Cooperation of stakeholders also brought some results which were not initially planned in the application but are very valuable outcomes:

In terms of public transport, the project enabled the integration of the Finnish Digitransit service into the Estonian peatus.ee service and thus, directly improving travel chain planning over the sea in near future

During the project, a possibility to purchase tickets for the Helsinki region public transport from Tallink and Eckerö Lines ferries was created, additionally to the planned results. This helps improve e.g. work-related commute.
