UniLog improved university-level vocational training

The UniLog project improved university-level vocational training by creating a joint study package for logistics. The project developed flexible teaching materials (18 ECTS for the bachelor's level, 15 ECTS for the master's level), which can also be used in vocational training and as part of lifelong learning programs.

Bachelor level programme includes three modules:

New technologies
Holistic approach to logistics
Managerial skills, including sustainability

Master level programme includes following modules:

New technologies (4ECTS)
Holistic approach to logistics (8ECTS)
Commercial Law (3 ECTS)

The Much more project contributed to better social inclusion of the middle-aged men who have had addiction problems in their past. The project objective was to provide social support for men and thus empower them to reunite with their families and the society. Over 120 men were reached through peer-group activities in Sweden, Latvia and Finland.

The project partners from Gävle, Riga and Turku developed and tested an intervention model on how to involve target group men in planning and taking part in peer group activities. Based on the peer-group participants’ interest, the men tried different things from art therapy, cooking, hiking, and peer-group discussions in non-judgemental atmosphere. The methods used in different cities varied, but they all focused on participatory and easily accessible peer-group activities. Over half of the men kept coming back to the meetings and found them beneficial to them, so the project goals were reached.

Furthermore, the project also contributed to the capacity of health and social care professionals working with the target group that is difficult to reach. The partners organised several trainings for professionals who wish to try new methods to work with their clients. In total, over 50 professionals were reached in the project trainings.

The project compiled their most relevant learnings from trainings as a toolbox to be further utilised by other professionals. In addition, pros and cons of different participatory methods tested in the peer-groups were presented in the SWOT analysis.

Skills for social and working life for the middle-aged men with past addiction problems

DSB strenghtened social inclusion of people with deviant sexual behaviour

The main objective of the project was to strengthen social inclusion of people with deviant sexual behaviour (DSB).

During the implementation, the project offered counselling services both for people with deviant sexual behaviour and their closed ones. Altogether 873 people got counselling whether though online or phone call services which were provided by partner organisations.

Project also organised training for professionals who are working with people with DSB. Totally, 292 professionals with different backgrounds (social and youth workers, psychiatrists, psychologist, police and probation workers, child protection specialists, sexual health counsellors etc.) participated in the trainings. Trainings focused on how to provide adequate and relevant counselling to DSB. Training themes included for example topics like sexuality in general, different types of DSB, main associated problems and common intervention, as well as therapy methods; how to detect possible DSB among clients and how to approach the person; how to establish trusting relationship with DSB etc.

Amongst the other activities, the project also implemented a media campaign to raise knowledge about DSB. The campaign´s main purpose was to inform the target group about counselling services and channels where they can get help and advice.

Through these activities, the project aimed on decreasing of social exclusion of DSB and increasing the inclusion of DSB into the labour market.

Social inclusion of people with problematic sexual behaviour

Acute teamwork model in child care strengthens professional collaboration - ACUCARE

Many children in vulnerable living environments need psychiatric treatment as well as child protection services. The demand for a closer collaboration between different services is high, but professionals act in separate sectors and thus effective inter-professional networking is difficult to establish.

The ACUCARE partnership considered it beneficial for specialists to learn from each other by using the acute teamwork model to help children and adolescents. The project developed vocational e-course trainings for nursing-, social work and social educator students - a new model of interprofessional psychiatric acute teamwork.

The project mapped and reported the needs for interprofessional training and created the e-learning platforms. The training modules were developed in English and translated into Finnish and Estonian. The project’s main result was the new 10 (5+5) ECTS interprofessional vocational training e-course, including e-learning materials and an e-curriculum manual for the use of different vocational education training organisations.
The e-course consists of two themes:

family work in ‘open care’ (5 ECTS) - focus in working within families to promote educational partnership between parents and professionals; to bring together regional family services, such as maternity and child health clinics, early childhood education and care services, school and local family and early support services to help families
residential childcare in foster care (5 ECTS) - focus in enhanceing the skills for an integrated care approach; to incorporate the interprofessional expertise and advance the existing child protection and mental health services better

A literature review about mental health care interventions in child welfare was submitted for wider international readership. Three scientific articles were planned, but the target was too ambitious. One article was published.

National implementing the project results was well done by all partners. It was somewhat challenging in Estonia to find relevant training programmes where the developed modules can be integrated, as the childcare responsibilities are divided differently between organisations in Estonia and Finland. The project accomplished a certain familiarity and understanding of different child protection systems and professional cultures in the partner countries.

Another objective was to increase mobility and job satisfaction of social and health care workforce and integration of Central Baltic labour market. The possibilities were discussed, and there are lots of similarities, but also differences in professionals’ attitudes to family and its rights and the concept of ‘family’ in Estonia and Finland. It is beneficial for specialists to share experiences and for students to learn about other profession´s competencies.

The project used modern information and communication technologies for its work and produced e-learning materials. Project successfully communicated its achievements via presentations in international conferences and by organising seminars for the stakeholders.

ACUCARE Project’s final seminar 2.11.2017 focused on promising interprofessional collaboration practices in psychiatric and child protection sectors in Finland and Estonia.

Acute Team in Youth Psychiatric Services Targeted to the Residential Child Care

CB HealthAccess - Export of products within the Health and Wellness sector

The project “Access to Distant Markets in Health and Wellness” (CB HealthAccess) has helped a number of SMEs from the CB region, within the health technology sector, to achieve sales, raise investments, and to close different type of collaboration agreements in four distant markets; South Korea, the United States, India and Uganda.

In total 58 individual companies in the health technology sector from Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Sweden participated in the project. Some of the companies were active in more than one market during the project. The participation in the different markets was allocated as follows:
In the South Korean market activities; 25 companies were involved.
In the US market activities; 22 companies were involved.
In the Indian market activities; 12 companies were involved.
In the Ugandan market activities; 10 companies were involved.

Direct results within the project period, in short: 5 sales were achieved, 4 investments were raised, and 1 agreement with a business partner was signed.

Indirect results within the project period, in short: 3 preliminary agreements for co-operation were signed, 1 contract was closed, 2 cooperation projects were started, 1 test marketing was started, 1 study in a hospital was started.

In addition, in the end of the project many companies were still in negotiations or working on meeting local regulations in order to continue their access to the markets.

On a more general level the project has raised awareness of, and interest in, distant markets. As the market of health technologies is global, the companies need to expose themselves and their products to international competition and consumers in other countries in order to be able to develop more competitive products and market adaptations.

SimE - ethical competence for nursing students

The SimE project improved nursing students’ ethical competence in Finland, Sweden and Latvia. The main achievement of the project were the three aligned study courses (6 ETCS) on simulation pedagogy for nursing students, and an e-handbook on the course themes. Thus the project increased the share of aligned vocational education training curricula in the region.

The course topics were:
1) Basic Ethics in Health Care (2 ETCs),
2) The Ethical Coffee Room (1 ETC),
3) Simulations in Ethical Issues (3 ETCs).

In addition to providing a general introduction to ethics in health care, the project provides tools for understanding the essential concepts of ethics, moral and norms and exploring different ethical values that are often culture related. This will ease the nursing students to meet patients from different background.

The project courses encourage the students to familiarise with ethical guidelines and articles but also patient care studies. Anonymous online environment is provided for students to discuss with peer student group on student’s own experiences on challenging ethical situations that they face during the clinical practise. Furthermore, the courses provide simulation practises on different ethical scenarios, after which the students give and receive feedback on their ethical activity from the peer students.

Course material was compiled in the e-Handbook with the guidelines how to implement the course.

Simulation pedagogy in learning ethics in practice in health care

Aligned curriculum and training material about skills of cleaning service and health care services in Estonia and Finland

The SAFHY project compared and aligned two vocational education and training curricula from the hygiene point of view.

In the field of cleaning services, two modules of the curriculum for Cleaning supervisor in Estonia were aligned with the modules of study programme Specialization in Cleaning Service /Site Facilities Operative in Finland.

To align the hygiene aspects in nursing and health care curricula in both countries, selected modules concerning care procedures in the curriculum of Care worker (EST) were aligned with the modules in curriculum for Practical nurse (FIN).

Project developed significant amount of digital learning materials for cleaning and healthcare specialities on the subject of hygiene. Learning materials can be used in Finnish, Estonian, English and Russian in order to support the learning of different groups of students. Digital learning materials include 21 topics for the health care sector, 27 topics for the cleaning sector, 5900 photos, 120 videos in 4 languages. The material contains text, learning tests, videos, photos and a professional vocabulary. Digital learning material was developed for VET institutions and work places.

Safety and Hygiene - safer environment

Harmonised vocational educational training in nursing and maritime education thanks to OnBoard-Med

By harmonising and developing curricula for both maritime and nursing education institutions, OnBoard-Med filled a gap in multinational shipping industry.

The OnBoard-Med project developed nine vocational modules (2-8 ETCS) in maritime emergency management, medical treatment, and occupational safety. During the project it was found that communication and leadership are crucial for successful operation and handling of emergency.

The courses are suitable for maritime (seaman, deck officer, maritime engineer) and nursing (registered nurse, emergency care nurse and public health nurse) education institutions.

The results can have a broad impact on the education in the Central Baltic regions.
There are several dozens of vocational schools giving education of the OnBoard-Med topics, many in nursing.

The courses consist of a huge amount of learning materials developed in collaboration with the target groups: emergency crews, ships’ nurses, nautical and engineering professionals. Materials directly reflect the needs of working life and are based on survey and interviews of stakeholders and experiences gained. Real life scenarios, problems, solutions, simulation cases and materials are main achievements that can be used in other courses, too. Students enjoyed the joint pilots. It felt more real to practice communication with students from another country with both communicating in English.

The results contribute significantly to the existing national educational practices, and therefore attract continued use and further development e.g. as part of lifelong learning. The content is suitable for both e-learning and contact learning courses.
Both youth and adult learners attending the programs can increase their employment possibilities, as they easier will obtain the mandatory certificates needed in their professions and the materials in English improves the students’ mobility as workforce.

All institutions will get direct benefits from the project as the aligned course contents, the teachers’ manuals, and harmonised educational materials are free to use.

Different institutions can apply for study courses materials if they want to offer their students new study courses in related topics or to develop new ones.
Project partners are responsible for sharing the materials.

NURED aligned curricula for home-care nurses

NURED project developed two new aligned curricula for future home-care nurses in Estonia, Finland, Latvia, and Sweden. The curricula were developed considering stakeholder needs: the partners created pilot versions of four different modules based on surveys conducted with home care staff in 2017-2018. The surveys’ results revealed the differences in home care nursing practices in all four partner countries.

The available modules are:

1. Teamwork and professional skills in the home care setting (lead partner, resp. Arcada, Finland);
2. Occupational stress, stress and time management (Rīga Stradiņš University, Latvia);
3. E-services and e-products (Tallinn Health Care College, Estonia)
4. Pedagogical attitude and way of work (PFA) in intellectual disability practice in the home care context (Mälardalens Högskola, Sweden).

All partners conducted pilot testing on the module they were responsible for. After the testing, the 1st draft of the aligned NURED curricula was created in the autumn of 2018. These early drafts of the aligned curricula were assessed in focus group discussions by each partner in the winter of 2019. Each focus group discussion was carried out with 3-10 participants including students, educators, and other field professionals. The final draft of the aligned curricula was tested among nursing students in all partner countries during autumn 2019. All partners also created short educational videos, publicly available to the NURED website together with the final version of the NURED aligned curricula.
